The North Of England Pathology and Screening Education Centre Introductory Course in Gynaecological Cytology is a NHSCSP approved four week course designed especially for trainee BMS’s and Cytoscreeners.
Any one course accommodates a maximum of eight trainees and through a series of workshops, lectures and tutorials it introduces the many aspects of gynaecological cytology to students at their own pace.
This course serves as the initial training session at the start of the Cervical Sample Taker Training Course for the purpose of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme.
The blended learning programme consists of:
Self-directed learning and live virtual sessions w/c 5th October 2026
Face-to-face training full day session on either 15th or 16th October 2026

Day 1 & 2: This is a two day theoretical course covering the curriculum outlined by the British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. This course will be suitable for all members of the Medical and Nursing Profession who play an active role in the management of Colposcopy Services and Cervical Screening.
Day 3: This is a practical one day course intended to complement the theoretical aspect of day 1 and 2 covering the areas within the BSCCP curriculum for cytology and gynaecological pathology.
This workshop will discuss the process of cancer causation, its classification and the classical features of invasion on cytology. It will also illustrate the features of those cases which arise in the invasive audit, in the hope of reducing their occurrence in future.
There will be a review of the findings from the published invasive audit reports, outlining what has been learned and where the programme may make improvements to further reduce the burden from cervical cancer.
Finally, there will be an outline of usual management options for those with cervical cancers.

This workshop will discuss the process of cancer causation, its classification and the classical features of invasion on cytology. It will also illustrate the features of those cases which arise in the invasive audit, in the hope of reducing their occurrence in future.
